Giant 3D Printer Prints Concrete Houses

I've blogged about tools and processes like this in the past.  Concrete in particular seems to lend itself to manipulation via virtual planning and design that can easily be delivered physically.  The Giant 3D Printer article linked below, and depicted in the animation, drive this point home.

MOOC 2.0 - Winds of Change Essay Linked

Professor Mead rites another insightful essay, this time analyzing the push back against MOOCs by academia and the looming threat, to staid academia, of the rising MOOC 2.0 wave.  Below is an excerpt and a link to the whole thing. Read the whole thing!
In the end, students are going to learn more and pay less. That will be good for the human race as a whole and, for anyone who really cares about social justice and the condition of the poor, it will be a step forward. And for colleges and universities smart enough to surf the waves of change rather than lying passively on the beach waiting to be crushed, the ride will be thrilling and transformative, rather than horrifying and bone-crushing.

Canada Leading the Way on Rare Earth Metals

Remember the energy crisis in the 1970s when we suddenly discovered the vast majority of the oil in the world was produced by members of OPEC nations?  A similar debacle is brewing with respect to the rare earth metals needed to keep our modern manufacturing processes flowing smoothly as China has a monopoly on the production of those metals.  Fortunately, Canada isn't ignoring the lessons of the 70s.  The article linked below provides insights in the Canadian strategy and the importance of rare earth metals to our modern economy.

Virtual Reality Just Around the Corner

Greetings readers.  I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Years! I apologize for the lull in posts at the end of the year but will try to make up for it now that the holidays are behind us.  Looking forward to 2014 and new adventures.

Below is a link to an interesting article describing a wearable virtual reality device similar to, but more engrossing than, Google Goggles.  I envision these VR devices as mechanisms whereby built industry professionals can explore facilities and infrastructure, real and imagined, in new ways.  While developed by and for gamers, the applications in the built environment are virtually unlimited.  From safety and training to marketing and quality review applications are limited only by the imagination of the users and developers of the technology.
