Great Trip to Chicago And Headed to Toledo Tomorrow

Had a great trip to Chicago last week to present at the Revit Technology Conference North America where I ran into a number of great contacts including Susan Brattberg @globaletraining and Allan Partridge @NextArchtectur both out of Canada.  I saw dozens of others there and had a great turn out for the Legal Facing BIM lecture I gave.

From there I traveled to FitzGerald Architects in downtown Chicago and presented to a great group of contractors, designers and developers who were full of great questions.  Thanks to Thomas Fennell and Tim Blatner @Fitzarch for making that event a huge success.

Next up was the BIM & IPD Chicago Linked in group headed by David Ivey of HOK.  Mike Bordenaro of the BIM Education Coop served as my personal guide while I was in Chicago and talked me into a parking lot across the street from the big red building in the sky that houses HOK's Chicago office.  The group that meet at HOK's office was small but very engaged.  Great ideas were exchanged and we all look forward to working together on projects in the future.

Tomorrow I present for AGC of Northwest Ohio and TRACE in Toledo.

Once I get settled in I intend to get some new material up on the Global e Training Website and begin to prepare for the joint meeting of the Canadian BIM Council and ACE BIM out of Edmonton this fall.  I hope to see all my Canadian friends there.  After that it looks like a trip to German, Ireland and the UK.

If anyone is interested in a BIM & IPD Workshop feel free to call.

James

Smart Built Culture Seminar Sponsored by AGC of Northwest Ohio & TRACE

BIM and IPD: Creating a Smart Built Culture in NW Ohio

Date And Time
6/25/2014
11:00 AM TO 2:30 PM

Event Description:

Collaborative Construction, AGC of NW Ohio and TRACE invite you to learn more about creating a smart built culture in Northwest Ohio. Join us on June 25, 2014 for this introductory seminar to explore the key features of a smart built culture and the best mechanisms for revolutionizing your firm's future.

Implementing BIM and IPD to enhance your business strategy poses interesting legal and cultural implications. Join us for insights on making it really work as James L. Salmon, a lawyer, founder of Collaborative Construction and teacher of the BIM Strategy course at Middlesex University (based in London), takes participants through a unique learning experience.

Building information modeling, (BIM) integrated project delivery, (IPD) and lean process improvements (first popularized and deployed by Toyota, Honda and other manufacturers) allow for major advancements in the coordination and planning of design and construction services. BIM and IPD require a strong yet flexible legal framework for support. Many firms' legal counsel and insurance providers warn of dire consequences to these new ways of providing professional services.

James L. Salmon spent 20 years litigating failed construction projects before forming Collaborative Construction. His mission now is to work with stakeholders in the built industry to build a new generation of legal frameworks that support and enable BIM and IPD success.

This seminar focuses on the cultural and legal implications of BIM and IPD drawing on portions of the BIM Strategy course James L. Salmon teaches for Middlesex University (based in London with campuses in Dubai, Malta and Mauritius). Highlighting the importance of creating a smart built culture to support BIM and IPD, the seminar offers a unique learning experience. Cross disciplinary IPD teams will be formed, during the seminar then tasked with planning, designing and constructing a block castle at each table.

The seminar will help participants appreciate the need for a smart built culture in Northwest Ohio. You will meet like-minded advocates seeking to leverage the value of collaboration among local, regional and national clients and teammates. Join us to explore the tools that enable the use BIM, IPD and lean processes. Creative stimulation of cross disciplinary conversations among participants will be common. Participants will establish themselves, and the NW Ohio Construction Industry as thought leaders with keen insights into leading BIM and IPD enabled projects. In short, participants will learn more about creating a smart built culture while simultaneously enhancing their own business strategies.

June 20 Trip to Chicago

I'll be in Chicago next Friday for a series of events.  First, I will make a presentation regarding legal facing BIM and IPD at the Revit Technology Conference.  That conference is taking place at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center Hotel on 19 – 21 June 2014.  The presentation is based on the masters level course in BIM Strategy I'm teaching for Middlesex University out of London and it focuses on the cultural and legal implications of BIM and IPD.  The presentation is slotted as Session 8 on Friday, June 20, from 10:45 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

I will arrive at the Revit Technology Conference early on Friday and be there until around 1:30 or 2:00 p.m.  By around 2:00 p.m. I plan on heading to the city of Chicago for two additional events.

First, I will be presenting at FitzGerald Architects' office at 912 W Lake Street , Chicago IL 60607 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Hosted by FitzGerald, that event will focus on the use of BIM and IPD to make clients and lenders comfortable with the metrics of a specific project.  I will share information related to two recent failed projects I was hired to consult on in San Antonio and Cincinnati.  After briefly analyzing what went wrong in each instance we will then open the floor to a Q&A related to better solutions.

Following that event I will participate in a membership drive for the BIM & IPD LinkedIn Group hosted by HOK at their downtown office located at 60 E Van Buren Street, Chicago IL 60605 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m..  There we will conduct a quick team building exercise based off Katy's Castle and will then open the floor to a general Q&A related to the scope and nature of IPD oriented projects in the market place.

The evening will wrap up over a few beers at the Plymouth Bar and Grill located at 327 S Plymouth Ct., Chicago, IL 60604.  Chicago area readers should feel free to respond to this email or reach out to me directly via my cell which is 512-630-4446.

If you live in the Chicago area and you can make it to any of the events listed look me up.  If not, no worries, we will try to connect another time.  Meanwhile, feel free to share a link to this blog post with your Chicago area colleagues and let me know if I can ever be of assistance to you or your company or clients.

BIM Enabled Project in San Antonio

The use of building information modeling (BIM) on the $135 million expansion of Children's Hospital of San Antonio, which is about 50% complete, was featured in local news story in San Antonio.  The link below takes you to a video report which details the use of BIM on the project.

L. A. Fuess, a full service structural engineering firm based in Dallas is providing BIM enabled shop drawings to MK Marlow the metal framing, ceiling and drywall contractor on the job.  The two companies are working closely to coordinate 3D BIM with field level work.  Below is a rendering of the planned expansion shared by the Children's Hospital of San Antonio.

Complex Health Care facilities represent a great opportunity to showcase the value of BIM and it's good to see the media paying attention.
