Last week I wrote a blog post regarding Lowe's use of visualization software tools - aka BIM - with customers interested in creating a custom home design. Now we see Home Depot selling MakerBot 3D printers.  The future is now!

Second Circuit Rejects Architect's Copyright Claim

The Second Circuit Court of Appeals rejected an architect's claim that a builder and others who used modified versions of his designs / drawings infringed on his copyright.  The court rejected the infringement claim reasoning that while the defendants copies certain elements of the architect's design those elements were not protected under copyright law.  Unprotected elements include design elements driven by consumer demand, those driven by building codes, topography, existing structures and those created out of engineering necessity.  Below is a link an article describing the decision in more detail.  If readers have additional questions feel free to call.

Flexible, Wearable & Printable Batteries? Is There Anything a Print3D Printer Cannot Do?

News from three fields I follow.  Battery technology, 3D Printers and Nanotechnology.  Combined the three bring us a generation of flexible, wearable and printable batteries. Read the story at the link and think about the cool things we could do with this in design and construction!

Deming's 14 Point Plan for Continuous Improvement

I'm working on a lecture that covers Deming's 14 point plan for continuous improvement.  For those who are not familiar with Edwards Deming he is often referred to as the father of lean six sigma and contributed to Japan's reputation for high quality products as a result of consulting he did for the Japanese government under McArthur as part of the Marshall Plan.

The lecture I'm working on brings Deming's plan to bear first on residential construction in the US and will, later, apply the plan to commercial construction.  This is all part and parcel with the Smart Built Culture Series and the work I'm doing with a group out of Southeast Minnesota on a Pilot Study there.  I'll post more details about that Pilot Study and the Deming 14 Point Plan lecture soon.

My goal is modernize the Lean Six Sigma and other process improvement tools, like Agile and IPD and bring the right cocktail of tools to bear on our broken built industry.  Accordingly, if you know anyone that needs help understanding the legal and cultural implications of BIM and IPD have them give me a ring!
